What an hourly rate comes to over a week, a month and a year, before tax, and how it compares with the rates platforms post.

All figures are before tax and fees. A month is a typical one (a week's pay × 52 ÷ 12); a year uses the weeks you enter, so it allows for holidays and for weeks with no work. The currency only changes the symbol: nothing is converted.

How your rate compares

Across 913 postings that state an hourly rate, the median is $60/hr. The middle half pay $30 to $95/hr, and the top 10% pay $130/hr or more.

Posted rates are in US dollars. Each figure uses the midpoint of a posting's range; "up to" ceilings, rates per hour of audio and paid studies are left out, and the same posting repeated for another country or language counts once. See the full pay data.

US dollars per hour.

Before you count on it

  • Almost all platforms pay contractors, not employees: you're paid for the hours or tasks you log, usually with no holiday pay, sick pay or pension contributions, and you usually handle your own tax.
  • Hours are rarely steady. Projects pause, queues run empty and new projects start without notice, so a full year at the same hours is the best case.
  • Some work is paid per task or per approved hour, which can come to less than the time you spent. See the glossary for what these terms mean.
  • Most platforms pay in US dollars, so what reaches your account depends on exchange rates and transfer fees.
